Just Give Up

Who do we think we are? Yes, read that laced with all the tone and sarcasm I feel. I started a new Bible reading plan about a week ago because I needed something to take me a bit deeper in the word than I’ve been and this morning, God did that thing only He can do.

He got me.

Maybe you know Job’s story. A whole book of the Bible is dedicated to the account of this good, blameless, righteous man who is unjustly “attacked” by Satan, an attack permitted by God Himself. It’s awful. Honestly, I don’t like the book. (Can I say that about the Bible?) I don’t like the story. I don’t want to relate to it in any way. I don’t want to lose everything just to prove my faith is real. I don’t want to suffer. Sorry, just not my thang. Agree?

But, it happens. Broken world, broken systems, broken people, broken angels result in suffering. So, after 30 chapters of Job trying to wrap his own heart and mind around what has happened to his life, God speaks.

GOD speaks.

And when God speaks, things change. I just need you to find a Bible and read it for yourself. Read chapters 38 and 39 without stopping. Read it aloud. Hear it. Ask the questions and know that God is speaking. Then just try to respond. I dare you.

A response is super difficult. There is no answer. And that’s the point.

Job 40:1-2, “And the LORD said to Job: “Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.”

Job 40:3, “Then Job answered the LORD and said: “Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.”

That’s right. Be quiet, Job. You don’t know anything.

Neither do I.

Listen, friends, sometimes we just need to give up already. We need to silence our mouths and surrender. We aren't even half as smart as we think we are, seriously. Humans have so elevated themselves and all we've really accomplished is a giant mess!

Look.around.

I’ll tell you, there is sweet, sweet freedom in surrender to the Almighty, when we let God be GOD. When we elevate Him. When we see Him as THE ONE who knows all things, does all things and as the one through Him all things exist. He’s got things under control.

We just don’t.

So, just give up. Give everything up to Him. Let Him be and watch how He makes things change. He's everything.

My daughter says that a lot. She’s 12. It generally goes something like this: I passionately probe, “Chloe, did you hear me? Are you listening?” She half-heartedly says, “What? I’m so confused.”
